I love me a good smoothie bowl! And yes, I love getting them at local shops (especially with so many here in Hawai’i) to try different flavors and toppings but my favorites are always made in our kitchen at home.
For this smoothie bowl, I strayed away from my usual acai bowl and instead let the color blue inspire my creation! I had seen these blue smoothie bowls but didn’t quite know how to make them. After a quick Pinterest search, I came up with these two helpful blogposts:
I loved both of the colors that these two recipes create (they are slightly different) so I checked our fridge, freezer + pantry to see what ingredients we had on hand. In the end, I ended up following the Rainbow Green Smoothie Bowls recipe, while adding some mango (grown from our tree), a little bit of greek yogurt + my favorite ingredient to add to smoothies – NATURAL CALM.
Natural Calm is a powdered magnesium supplement. When mixed with water, it becomes a fruity, effervescent drink that promotes healthy magnesium levels and balances calcium intake—helping us to feel less stressed and more relaxed. And boy do I need that this week!
As I shared, this can also be a perfect addition to your smoothies or smoothie bowls. They have a few different flavors – my recent favorite being raspberry lemon! I had seen Natural Calm in my health food store before but didn’t know exactly what it was or how it worked. After researching more about it and experiencing it myself earlier this year, I knew I had to share.
I believe good health is all about balance. A delicate balance must be maintained between the levels of magnesium and calcium in our bodies—especially at a cellular level. For example, calcium makes muscles contract, while magnesium allows them to relax. Calcium is needed for blood clotting and on the other hand, magnesium keeps the blood flowing freely.
Our bodies are designed to obtain the nutrients we need from the food we eat, including plenty of magnesium. Sadly, most of us (an estimated 80%) don’t get enough magnesium in our diets, while we often take in an excess of calcium, mainly from dairy products and supplements. Both high-calcium diets and stress-filled lives deplete the magnesium in our bodies even further. That’s where Natural Calm comes in.
How Does Natural Calm Ease Stress?
(as defined by Natural Vitality)
When we are under stress, our cells—which in their resting state contain magnesium—go through a change. Calcium, normally outside the cells, enters the cells to create an action state. Nerve cells become excited and muscles tense. When the stress has passed, magnesium then pushes the calcium back out of the cells and everything relaxes. However, when there’s not enough magnesium, calcium remains in the cells, prolonging stress and creating magnesium-deficiency symptoms. You experience this as feeling stressed. Cellular magnesium deficiency can also express itself as fatigue and low energy; inability to sleep; muscle tension, spasms and cramps; anxiousness and nervousness; headaches; constipation and abnormal heart rhythms. Natural Calm, sourced from the ocean’s rich mineral content, delivers magnesium in a highly absorbable and quick-acting form. Its effectiveness—The CALM Experience—has made Natural Calm the leading magnesium supplement in the natural market.
So here’s what ended up in my blender:
- 1 tablespoon heaping spirulina blue green algae
- 2 cups frozen banana chunks
- 2 teaspoons Natural Calm
- 1 cup water or almond milk
- 3 ice cubes
- 10 raw pecans
- 2 tablespoons raw hemp seeds
- 1 tablespoon heaping raw cacao nibs
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 3-4 drops stevia optional
- 1/4 cup fresh mango
- 1 teaspoon (or tablespoon) of greek yogurt
- fruit of choice for rainbow garnish – raspberries, bananas, mango, kiwi, etc.
This bowl was gorgeous and so tasty! I would love to find a way to make it even more blue and less green. I used local Hawaiian spirulina which isn’t quite as blue as others I’ve seen so that’s why I think it was on the greener side! I recommend finding some Blue Majik as shown in this POPSUGAR article if you want a more blue smoothie bowl.
Hope you enjoy this fun twist on the classic acai smoothie bowl! I know I did + was excited to share with you :)
