One month ago, we celebrated Aaron’s birthday! (How does time pass so quickly?!) This is the seventh birthday of his that we’ve spent together + his first here in Hawaii (last year we were road tripping across the USA). To make this one as special as the ones preceding, we decided to go somewhere on the island that we hadn’t been before!
We packed up two backpacks, drove to the southern part of the island then trekked through the expanse of lava to a hidden beach. It was six miles round trip but it was so worth it! You know that saying ‘Go the extra mile. It’s never crowded.’ His birthday was a perfect example! We had the beach all to ourselves. Twenty coconut trees just steps from the water’s edge. It was wonderful + such a special way to celebrate Aaron’s last 365 days of adventure.
Here are some photos from our day. . .
On our hike back to the truck, I asked Aaron, “what’s your word for this year?” I’ve never really asked him this on his birthday but I felt inclined to ask him this for some reason. Choosing a word to run with for the year ahead is something I’ve started doing for myself in the past few years, typically starting on new year’s day. Last year’s word was: Intention. Followed by this year’s: Focus. After thinking for a few paces, he threw out what he wanted to accomplish this year, how he wanted to feel, etc. The word Action came flooding to me. He agreed – Action – that was the word for his 32nd year.
In the days since his birthday, it’s proving to be an inspiring word for me also! We’re committed to going to the gym regurlarly, really taking action with the renovation we’re working on, making big travel plans for the season ahead, prioritizing our health. Personally, I’m a big thinker and planner – but I also want to be a doer. I want to accomplish things, take action, make change. It’s easy to sit, think and talk about something but in that same amount of time, you can begin to take action, to start whatever you seek to make happen.
This day – the conversations we had, the secluded beach all to ourselves, the past times we reminisced about – will forever be written on my heart.
Happy birthday, honey. I love you.
Hope you enjoyed these photos! This was one of my favorite big island adventures we have gone on! Also, I hope this inspires you to get out and do something unique to celebrate the milestones in your life. Break out of routine, skip the fancy dinner + spend quality time together. Think outside of the box – I think you’ll be surprised by how much joy you find!
