As a photographer + blogger, I have hords of photos on my phone, computer, harddrives, etc.
It’s messy. It’s scattered.
And it’s certainly not all framed or tangible in photo albums or our space.
There is something beautiful about capturing a moment when you’re at the beach, out with friends or on vacation and having that photo not get lost in the noise of your camera roll. Or on an SD card that is screaming for you to edit the images as soon as you get home. (forget your inbox! don’t you want access to these photos?!) No thank you.
Believe me, I know everyone loves the convenience of instant digital (I do too) but I also love instant film + instant printing too.
One of my favorite gifts I’ve received in the past year was a beautiful album that fit 128 instax minis into its pages. Thank you, Mom! There they were: the raw moments, silly splendor, crazy nights, simple moments. All captured (and printed) in the moment through laughs and cries alike. No stress of editing, or getting the perfect shot, or ordering prints online.
This is why instant printing is so powerful. Not to mention – fun!
Instant printing is perfect for events (weddings, parties, holiday shindigs) and for kids who are interested in photography but I also love them for travel – you can instantly capture something and give the print to friends or strangers that you meet + photograph!
Ever since being introduced to the Polaroid Snap + Polaroid Zip, I’m crushing hard! They’re new toys similar to the Instax Mini + I love them. The Snap works similarly to the Instax cameras where you capture the image + then the camera spits out the printed image out the side. We took ours hiking with us and some dear friends and upon reaching the snow covered lake at the top, I reached in my bag + snapped a photo with this, instead of my cell phone. That photo now of our beaming faces serves as a bookmark that makes me smile every time I close my book.
The Polaroid Zip on the other hand is a little instant printer. If you’re hangin’ out with me on Instagram (which I hope you are!) then you may have seen I hosted a giveaway with one of these as the prize earlier this fall! Everyone loved it and went wild for the giveaway! It’s so simple. You just hook up your phone via bluetooth to the printer and instantly print any image. It was perfect when we were setting up Aaron’s little sister’s dorm room. We had taken some photos that day that she wanted up on her bulletin board – boom! – pulled out this guy + there we were! She was freaking out excited about it. See? It’s powerful. Tangible.
PRINT THOSE MEMORIES!
I challenge you this season to capture your favorite memories in the moment and to stress less about the perfect shot. Capturing the moment is important for me (helllllo, looking back at family photos is my favorite) but I never want the stress of digital clutter to get in the way of that.
Break out the polaroid camera and the ‘big’ cameras (ya know, the ones that aren’t attached to Facebook instantly) so that you are savoring and recording the memories, not just posting them. Have a fantastic holiday week + enjoy making those memories!
When we first moved to Hawai’i, all I wanted to do was wear tropical clothes – bright colors, fun prints, etc.
I loved it at first, but then I realized that I’m not on vacation *wait, really?* + that a lot of what I had been wearing didn’t reflect my personal style. I was letting the landscape in which I was living dictate my style. Not necessarily a bad thing, although I wanted to preserve my more simple aesthetic and wear clothes that make me feel comfortable and myself.
I find that with a simple tee + some great denim, you can be yourself – no matter where you are.
If done right, a tee + denim can be the perfect, simple reflection of your style.
I’m going to share some tips to style tees + denim to create an elevated look. . .
One of my very favorite evenings of the summer was when we packed the car full of beach blankets, firewood + all things cozy heading straight for the shore. On the way, we stopped at our favorite Thai place in Camden + got some takeout. We had some of our most cherished people in the world meet us at the beach and let the evening unfold. It made for the perfect, simple night gathered with friends + family.
I wanted to show YOU how to host an intimate beach picnic – simply + easily:
➀ Keep it simple!
Bringing this concept alive can seem daunting to some. The first time we did it – it was for me. I tried to bring too much and do too much which ended up with us missing the sunset because we were late. Instead, this time we opted for takeout because it meant less prep time + easy clean up BUT you could easily bring a cheese board + salami or make sandwiches before hand. Rather than bringing lots of dishes + tons of food – keep it simple, keep it light.
Today, I am teaming up with Old Navy as part of their #50Styles50States campaign! Although I’m not originally from the state of Maine, I’m so beyond honored to be representing this state because it truly has influenced so much of my character and my style.
As you may know, we’re currently living nomadically – between Hawaii, Utah + Maine (with plenty of domestic + international travel in between). I’ve only lived in Maine (specifically the midcoast area) for the summer but I’ve been vacationing here for six years now. The relaxed culture, coastal vibes + clean classic lines have definitely shaped my style + perspective on fashion.
For YEARS I’ve wanted to create artful, curated photo books for our home. I have seen them done beautifully – think less scrapbook-y and more coffee table book compiled of creative images – and I so badly wanted to create one (or five) of our memories over the years.
Sadly, I hadn’t ever made it happen. . .
This summer, we’ve really had the time of our lives with Aaron’s family here on the east coast! Between my mom coming early in the summer, countless trips to the southern + northern parts of the state, paddle boarding/hiking/kayaking, family get togethers, etc – it’s truly been a blessing! In the midst of all these things we’ve created some beautiful images + captured some special moments.
When looking back on the photos of this summer, I got to thinking about ALL the adventures + photos this year has held for us. I started thinking “what am I going to do with them all?” . . . Yes, I have the blog to record our memories. And my Instagram. And hard drives full of photos. But beyond that, as you know, at this moment we don’t have a forever home to adorn the walls of (hell yes for being nomadic!). Then, BOOM! There was the photo book idea again. . . Why not bring them to life in that way? It’s something we could take with us anywhere, yet far more tangible than just viewing images on the computer.
So cue: BLURB BOOKS.
I was beyond giddy to finally be making my photo book come to life!
My creative process started with finding inspiration + figuring out what I wanted to do with the book. . .

TRAVEL GUIDE TO OAHU, HAWAI’I:
Now, granted, we squeezed exploring all of Oahu into just shy of a week! So, we still have a bunch of places we want to see but this was a great start. Since our last trip about five years ago, we haven’t had the chance to explore Oahu but since moving to the Big Island, our interest has sparked again! Sure enough, this trip was so much better than our first! We were able to both adventure and relax! Totally worth an extended weekend stay. We loved every moment + I wanted to share my insight on how to plan your next trip!
Arvo + Paiko | Coffee Shop + Plant Store
This was the cutest place! We stopped here right when we got off our early morning flight. The coffee was yummy (and much needed), the toasts were all scrumptious – but the vibe of the place – that’s what got me! It was 50% plant shop, 50% coffee shop and 100% rad. Plus, what better way to get your day started than a smiley face on your latte?!
SWITCHING TO ORGANIC MAKEUP
As I shared at the start of this year, I have deemed 2016 the year of INTENTION!
Part of my goal this year has been to become even more intentional with the products that I use. Choosing organic and REAL household products, food, etc has been important to me for half a decade. I want to know exactly what goes into my body, be aware of what I consume, what I use on my skin, etc.
Over the past five or so years, I’ve overhauled our eating habits (limiting sugar, eating all organic, whole foods), drinking habits (getting rid of soda + excess sugar), household products (getting rid of products containing sulfates, changing our laundry detergents + cleaning products), body products (shampoo, conditioner, body wash getting rid of lotions, etc) but the last thing on my list is something I use everyday . . . MAKEUP!
Sadly, it’s the last thing I’ve analyzed and switched over. I really wanted to have a better idea of the ingredients in my makeup because our skin is our largest organ and absolutely absorbs everything we put on it! With this in mind, I knew it was finally time for me to put my makeup under the same scrutiny that I put the other products in my life.
I said goodbye to drugstore + designer brands alike and instead sought out natural, organic makeup brands that I could actually read the ingredients! Sure enough, my skin has been way happier!
I’ve been loving ALL of the brands listed below and knew I wanted to share them with you. Whether you want to try out a new product for summer, or whether you want to overhaul your makeup bag entirely – I hope you find this post helpful! And as always, I am here to answer any questions you may have!
ALL THE BRANDS INCLUDED:
Colorescience | 14E Cosmetics | Kari Gran | COOLA | Lilah B
ENJOY. . .
These last couple of weeks (well, more like the month of May) have been rough – point blank. Although I don’t want to let the sadness and chaos of them overcome the beautiful experiences we had the preceding weeks before everything untangled.
As you may have seen, we went to Oahu at the end of April. We hadn’t been in about five years and we wanted to get a more intimate, adventurous and luxurious experience on the island to combat the touristy experience we had years ago. One of our very favorite memories from this trip to Oahu was a sunset sail!
